FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I really need trip insurance or trip protection?
Alaska is a special place, home to some of the most incredible country you’ll ever see. It’s also remote and is prone to adverse weather conditions, which can impact travel and airline schedules. We HIGHLY ENCOURAGE trip coverage and believe it’s worth whatever the additional cost may be so that you have the peace of mind when you book your trip. Check with your credit card company and/or airline to see what they offer for trip protection.

Are tips expected? What is a good tip?
It’s a tip-based business, and our crew takes great care to give you the best possible experience. You have the option to add a 15% gratuity during your order, or if you prefer you can bring cash during your trip.

Do I need to Bring Gear?
We will provide fly rods and spin rods as well as hip waders and helmets for the ATV’s and side-by-sides.

Lunch?
A hearty lunch with plenty of snacks and water is provided on all of our excursions. Please let us know in advance about any dietary restrictions — just add a note in the comments section of your waiver — and we’ll do our very best to accommodate them.

What do I bring?
Fishing license, camera, hat, gloves, water proof jacket and pants, and warm layers are highly recommended. We will give you a complete gear list well before your trip so you will be prepared for an incredible adventure!

What if it’s raining?

We won’t let a little rain stop us; we just believe in the right clothes.  Bring synthetic layers (not cotton) a rain jacket and rain pants.

Where do I go day of?

For going out to Saltery you will meet your guide in the Saltery Cove Parking lot.

Your guide will call you the day before your trip to confirm the exact meeting time and details. It’s about a 25-minute drive from town.

June—September:  Sockeye (Red’s)
July—September:  Pinks (Humpy’s)
August—September:  Chum (Dog’s)

What do we do with the fish?
All of your catch is delivered in the round to a local sport fish processing facility. They handle the cleaning, packaging, and freezing for you, and use airline-approved Wet-Lock shipping boxes so you can take your fish home or ship it. We use these two Kodiak processors:

  • Kodiak Island Smokehouse

(907) 486‑6455

1819 Mill Bay Road, Kodiak, AK 99615

kodiakislandsmokehouse.com

  • WildSource

(907) 531-5009

419 Shelikof St, Kodiak, AK 99615

Processing procedures by trip type-

  • Day Trips: You bring your catch into one of the processors listed above, then return your cooler to Saltery on the same afternoon.
  • Boat + River Trips: We stop at WildSource to drop off your ocean catch, then you can drop off your river catch there too—keeping everything in one location for convenience.
  • Longer Stays: Guides assist by processing fish daily (except the final day). On the last day, you’ll take your remaining catch to either of the processors listed above.

Your guide will also keep you informed during the trip and answer any questions you have about fish handling or delivery.
